PROPOSED AGENDA ITEM
SUBJECT: 1st Lt. Thomas E. Doyle Building
CAP/CC – Brig Gen Bowling
INFORMATION BACKGROUND:
Thomas E. Doyle became a cadet in the California Wing of CAP in 1975 and excelled as a cadet commander, participant in the International Air Cadet Exchange, and the 1980 California Cadet of the Year. Tom Doyle soloed in a glider at the age of 14, and received his private pilots license at the age of 17 with the assistance and inspiration of the CAP cadet program.
With the skills learned in CAP, Tom Doyle was successful in receiving an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy, graduated towards the top of his class, and became an F-16 pilot in the United States Air Force. While at the Air Force Academy Tom Doyle excelled in the soaring program and became a certified flight instructor in his third year at the academy.
While an Air Force Pilot, Tom Doyle went above and beyond the call of duty as an exceptional pilot. He experienced more than one equipment failure incident that could have resulted in the loss of assets, yet he was willing to, and had the skill to, save the airplanes through his commitment to essential core values earning him the Tactical Training Wing “Aircrew-of-Distinction” Citation. It was his long experience in a glider from the age of 14 in CAP that was attributed, in part, to his ability to land and save an expensive F-16 with a “dead stick” landing.
In a time of peace, when he did not have to do so, 1st Lt. Tom Doyle gave his life for the adults and children of Forst, Germany by electing to stay with his malfunctioning aircraft to steer it away from schools and shops in the congested areas within the town.
1st Lt. Tom Doyle’s life best exemplifies, and is symbolic of, the CAP core values of Integrity, Volunteer Service, Excellence, and Respect, as well as the core values of the U.S. Air Force of Integrity First, Service Before Self, Excellence in All We Do
The Soaring Building at the Air Force Academy is yet to be named and a name will be chosen sometime in 2004. (See attachments).
