Local Youth Become Part of Homeland Security Effort

McChord AFB, Tacoma, WA - On March 4, 2003, local youth, ages 12-18, will graduate from Basic Cadet Training at the McChord Composite Squadron.  The graduation will take place on March 4, 2003 starting at 6:45 p.m. in Building 1216 on McChord Air Force Base in Tacoma.  Civil Air Patrol has been operating under the auspices of Homeland Security since November 1, 2002.  This is the first graduation class of cadets at McChord after C.A.P. became an arm of the Homeland Security effort of our nation.

A media briefing will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.  in building 1216.  An RSVP is necessary so base access can be arranged.  Plan on arriving at the gate by 5:30 p.m. for check-in.  Maps and directions provided upon request.

Civil Air Patrol’s Cadet Program is designed to provide youth, from sixth grade through age 20, with a safe, encouraging environment in which to learn, mature and explore opportunities to help them reach their potential as adults.  Cadets participate in a structured program through group and individual activities that include aerospace education, physical training, leadership, and moral and ethical values.  The program encompasses 16 achievement levels that include study in these four areas.  Upon completion of each achievement, the cadet earns increased cadet rank, decorations, awards, eligibility for national and international special activities, and an opportunity for flight and academic scholarships.  The program aims to produce well-rounded, confident young people equipped to meet the challenges of adulthood.

Civil Air Patrol is the all volunteer Auxiliary of the United States Air Force.  C.A.P. started in 1941, just six days before the attack on Pearl Harbor and served as an integral part of this nation’s defense during World War II.  C.A.P. has come full circle and is now an integral part of our nation’s Homeland Security effort.  There are over 1,600 Squadrons with 60,000 volunteers poised to serve our country through C.A.P.  C.A.P.’s motto is Semper Vigilans (Always Vigilant).  We represent the dedicated Cadets and Senior members of the McChord Composite Squadron.

The three pronged mission of C.A.P. is to provide Emergency Services, Aerospace Education, and to foster and develop youth through the Cadet program.  For more information on the C.A.P. national effort you can visit www.capnhq.gov.  Our Squadron’s web site can be found at www.mcchord.org.  C.A.P. is a 501(c)(3) corporation.  Although C.A.P. receives financial support from the Air Force, there are many unmet needs that require the generosity of businesses and individuals.
